The Courthouse requires you to schedule an appointment to apply for your Marriage License. There are many time slots available each day and you can usually schedule a same day appointment. The process at the Courthouse takes approximately a half hour.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!
If either party has been previously married, the marriage application shall include the names of all previous spouses and any minor children from those marriages.
If the most recent prior marriage ended in divorce, dissolution, or annulment, you must submit the Court issued Certified Entry showing how that marriage was terminated at the time of the marriage application. Example: Divorce Decree, Entry of Dissolution, Entry of Annulment, etc.
If the previous marriage ended due to the other spouse's death, you must provide a Certified Copy of the death certificate at the time of the marriage application.
Documents MUST be ORIGINAL and CERTIFIED! The court cannot accept electronic copies of any kind, nor will they accept a copy of a certified document.
Each of the applicants must supply to the court their respective address, name, age, place of birth, occupation, parent #1's name, parent #2's name (and maiden name if applicable), your social security numbers and the name of the person who is expected to solemnize the marriage (if already chosen).
Applicants must appear together in person and have their driver's licenses or state issued ID.
If previously married you will need your former spouse’s name EXACTLY how it appears on your marriage termination decree, the date of termination from the file stamp on the front of your decree, the case number and names of any minor children from that marriage.
MAKE SURE YOU TAKE AN ORIGINAL CERTIFIED COPY OF THE MARRIAGE TERMINATION DECREE OR ORIGINAL CERTIFIED COPY OF THE DEATH CERTIFICATE WITH YOU!
The clerk will take your application and manually input your information for your Marriage License. They will have you double check that everything is correct. READ IT ALL VERY CAREFULLY! They are human and mistakes are often made. Pay close attention to EVERYTHING when they have you review it!
The Courthouse ONLY accepts Cash for payment for your Marriage License. The fee is $60. Certified Copies are $2 each. You can also purchase a Keepsake Certificate and Wallet Cards for an additional $1 each.
I recommend taking $70 cash with you.
You will need certified copies of your Marriage License if you will be changing your name, for health insurance, etc. The fee is $2 per copy and you should purchase them when you apply for your Marriage License. The clerk will give you an envelope to address to yourself and the copies will be mailed directly to you in approximately a week and a half. I HIGHLY recommend ordering at least 2 Certified Copies of your Marriage License when you apply for it (saves time and hassle).
If you do not order copies when you apply for your Marriage License you can request a copy by mail. Send a self-addressed stamped envelope, a check or money order (no cash) for Two ($2.00) Dollars per copy payable to "The Stark County Probate Court" with the names of the applicants and the date of marriage.
